top 10 films

i have finally mustered the courage to attempt and compile a list of my 10 favourite movies of all time. now i want to hear from every body who reads this blog waht their favourite films are, but i dont want any complaining that my favourite films arent the same as yours, and i dont want anybody going "oh, this should have been on the list instead of that". the reason its NOT on the list instead of that is either because i havnt seen it, i didnt like it, or in my oppinion these films are just plain better.

10: American Psycho.

staring christian bale as patrick bateman, American psycho follows bateman through several days in his seemingly completely emotionless, yet buisness-competitive life. however, bateman is secretly hiding a dark secret: his well educated facade is simply a mask that hides bateman's uncontrollable urges to kill and mutilate almost everybody around him. as the story progresses, the viewer is lead around in psychological circles, and you end up wondering wether or not bateman is a killer, or simply psychotic. brilliantly excecuted, well directed, both hilarious and shockingly blood thirsty, this film is truly every slasher/psychological thriller fans dream come true.

best scene: bateman dropping a running chainsaw down a flight of stairs and succesfully hitting a woman who is trying to escape him.

best quote: I have all the characteristics of a human being: flesh, blood, skin, hair; but not a single, clear, identifiable emotion, except for greed and disgust. Something horrible is happening inside of me and I don't know why. My nightly bloodlust has overflown into my days. I feel lethal, on the verge of frenzy. I think my mask of sanity is about to slip.

9: A Clockwork Orange.

Malcolm Mcdowell plays Alex Delarge, a boy of about 18, who by night travels around with his group of little "droogies", raping women, drinking narcotic spiked milk, listening to beathoven, and seeking out "a bit of the old ultra-violence", wich includes mercilessly beating any person they see fit. by day, Alex skips school frequently, as is seen as a disgrace by his parents. then, Alex gets caught by the police, and is sent off to a psych ward, were experimental procedures are placed upon him, wich wind up leaving Alex unable to even think a single violent thought, as when he does, it triggers a reaction that makes him feel like he is slowly dying. a true classic of cinematography, and arguably one of stanley kubricks best films, it is funny, exceedingly violent, and oddly thought provoking.

Best scene: picking up two girls at the record store while searching for beathoven works.

Best quote: It’s funny how the colours of the real world only seem really real when you viddy them on the screen."

8: Repo: The Genetic Opera.

Sung like an opera played to metal music, this marvelous film details the events of the near future, were humanity is plagued with organ failures. millions die. but from the blood, gene co. rises up, a company that manufactures and "loans" out organs. indeed, organ's have become a fashion accessorie. but, miss a payment on your lovely new organs, and gene co. dispenses the repo man, a masked surgeon who mercilesly takes back gene co's organs from still breathing victims. the musical score is absolutely brilliant, and down right catchy. the death is artistic, the blood is neon, the acting and singing is superb, and all in all it makes for quite an enjoyable little piece of work.

best scene: the repo man reposessing an organ while talking to his daughter over the phone.

best quote: Stay with the dead, i'm joining the living

7: Shaun Of The Dead.

absolutely hilarious film, Shaun is a mild mannered applience salesman who's life is going no-where. his girlfriend has dumped him, his best friend is an idiot, and he spends every night in a bar drinking himself to sleep. one day however, he decides to sort his life out: to get his girl back, see his mum, and do something with his life! unfortunately for Shaun, the day he decides to change happens to coincide with the freshly dead rising as flesh eating zombies... without a doubt the hardest i have laughed in a film ever. the british humour is evident throughout, the characters are down right loveable, and its one of those rare films you can watch over and over again and still find something new to laugh about.

best scene: walking to the shops with a hangover.

best quote: who died and made you fucking king of the zombies???

6: Pan's Labyrinth

in spanish with english subtitles, Pan's Labyrinth opens with a story about how the king of the underworld's daughter ran away to the overworld one day, and upon realising what a cruel place it is, dies. the king of the underworld now waits for his daughters soul to return to him. the film then moves to spain, 1944, and Ofelia's mother has just married a captain in the spanish army. amidst a civil war, extreme cruelty on the captains behalf, and her mother falling gravely ill, Ofelia finds a fawn in a labyrinth, and the faun is convinced that she is the long lost daughter of the underworld king. the faun sets her 3 challenges to complete by the next full moon, to prove that she is the kings daughter. this film, if anything, is a classic fairytale; magical and enchanting, yet also mean and violent. the cruelt and evil of the humans is starkly contrasted with the otherworldly charm of the faun, and the childish joy of his 3 pixie guides. this film is without a doubt the director, Guillermo del Toro's masterpiece of his career.

best scene: running from the pale creature through the corridoor after it has eaten 2 of the fairy's.

best quote: I'm not some old man! Or a wounded prisoner! Motherfucker... Don't you dare touch the girl. You won't be the first pig I've gutted!

5: Donnie Darko.

Donnie Darko is a very troubled teen. apparently a paranoid schizophrenic, he is on many medications, see's a psychologist, and wakes up in the strangest places with no recollection of how he got there. then one night, he see's frank the bunnie, a grotesque, demonic looking bunnie outfit worn by an unknown man. frank tells him that in 28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes, and 12 seconds, the world will end. a jet engine falls on donnie's house, wich would have killed him had frank not lured him outside. this marks a countdown of bizzare events, each eating away at donnie's sense of what is real and what is fantasy. as he skips on his meds, he begins to experience that he can see potential, and thus through time, and frank the bunnie increasingly is asking more and more of him, from flooding the school to burning a local mans house to the ground. all the while, donnie cannot escape the impending doom of the worlds apparent end. this movie is trippy to say the least. well directed and casted, all the characters play their parts incredibly well, and the overall feel of the movie really gets to you. outstanding film, and without a doubt, frank the bunnie is one of the most complicated side characters ever introduced into a film.

best scene: sitting in the cinema, watching a time portal open up on the big screen.

best quote: why are you wearing that stupid man suit???

4: V For Vendetta.

the not too distant future, and england is under a totalitarian rule under the chancellor addam suttler. the laws are strict, and the punishments severe. the people are afraid of their government. but one night when evey is out past curfew and is assaulted by fingermen, she meets V, a masked vigilante who proceeds to blow up the old baily, before procaliming that one year from then, he will finish guy fawkes work and blow up parliment. in the ensuing year, london falls into chaos and dissaray, inspector finch falls deeper and deeper into conspiracy, and evey falls in love with V. a moving film, with dark truths woven amongst the fabrications of film, action sequences to die for, dialogue to please any intelligent person, and enough sub-plots to keep you literally clinging to the edge of your seat. i have watched this more times than any other film, and it never gets old.

best scene: the final scene. i wont spoil it in case you havnt seen it yet.

best quote: beneath this mask there is more than flesh, there is an idea. And ideas, Mr Creedy, are bulletproof.

3: Pulp Fiction.

Quentin tarantino orchestrates a highly ammusing, increadibly complicated piece of work here. two hitmen hired to reclaim a glowing briefcase. a boxer on the run from a crime lord. a crime lords drug addicted wife out on the town. a loving couple who rob banks for a living. a man who makes problems such as blood-filled cars dissapear. this film has everything you could ever ask for: dialogue, action, violence, profanities, humour, pop culture referances, and a killer soundtrack. i do not know a single person who has seen this movie and disliked it. a classic. a masterpiece. a fucking awsome movie.

best scene: the breakfast scene with big kahuna burgers.

best quote: he threw a nigger outa his four story window for giving his wife a foot massage???

2: Howls moving castle.

what can i say aside from wow? a girl working in a hat shop is transformed into a 90 year old woman by a witch. she runs away from home and runs into the legendary wizard howl, and his moving castle powered by the fire demon calcifer. absolutely beautiful story, and the animation is practically flawless. the voice cast is just plain awsome, the vivid imagery and colours only seem to make the world of howl's moving castle more enchanting. magic, fire demons, war, romance, comedy, flying dogs, i cant begin to describe the ammount of stuff in this film. the only reason it isnt number one on this list is because the ending irritated me, because it only works out good if you have been paying rrrreeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaalllllllllllyyyyyyyyyyy close attention throughout the whole film to what the background characters are saying. quite simply, i love this film.

best scene: when sophie finally walks through the black door.

best quote: i dont see the point in living if i cant be beautiful...

1: the crow.

anyone who knows me could have seen this coming. the best film of all time. the night before halloween, a young couple, eric draven and shelly webster, are murdered in their flat by a violent street gang of arsenists, rapists and murderers. a year later, erics soul cannot rest, still burning from the injustice done to him and shelly. a crow carries his soul back to the world of the living, and eric rises from his grave as an immortal avenger, and he begins his revenge upon those that had wronged him. sarah, a child whom shelly and draven looked after, has since become friends with a cop who got fired for investigating too deeply into the draven/webster murders, and both begin to believe they are seeing a ghost as draven flits in and out of the shadows of their lives. this is without a doubt one of the best movies ever made. the city setting is so dark and rainy, it makes batmans gothan city look like play school. the soundtrack is frickin' magnificent, with bands from the cure, to nine inch nails, to rage against the machine. the main character of eric draven.... i cannot begin to describe him. he is in one word: amazing. Brandon Lee was born to play eric draven, and i dont think any other actor could have done a better job. how unfortunate that he died 8 days away from the end of filming. the tone and themes the film present are gritty and a painful reminder of what type of society we live in, and the villains are at times creepy, evil, sadistic, sick, and fucked up, and yet at other times funny, loud, rude, motivational, and child-like. the direction is phenomenal, i cannot find a single error anywhere in this film. Rest in peace brandon lee, you will always be remembered.

best scene: were draven is going through photo's of shelly and him, and the photo's send painful memories into his brain. it becomes too much, and he punches the mirror and breaks down crying. this scene always brings a tear to my eye.

best quote: he's already dead. he died a year ago, the moment he touched her. their all dead, they just dont know it yet.

thanks for reading everyone.
